Brookfield, WI—Christian Science camp Leelanau-Kohahna is hosting a camp show and potluck supper on Friday, January 6, 2012 in Brookfield. Directors Kathleen Moyer and Weldon Rutledge will share a video presentation and answer questions about the Northern-Michigan camp.
We asked Kathleen to share some insights about Leelanau-Kohahna and her experiences there. Here's what she had to say.
CSW: What makes a Christian Science camp unique or different from other camps?
Kathleen: Our camp has a distinct focus on personal excellence, character education, and the opportunity to learn how to value and study Christian Science. We have so much fun with our wide array of activities, and on top of that we are learning to be better men and women. Our campers gain confidence, a sense of joy and compassion, an appreciation for the outdoors and spending quality time with friends, and of course they gain a strong sense of unconditional Love through brotherhood and sisterhood.
CSW: What do you find special about Leelanau-Kohahna?
Kathleen: The friendships that are made here are unparalleled. The Christian Science that is taught, practiced, and demonstrated is so strong here and it helps set this experience apart from any other opportunities children are having in their schools, sports teams, and other extracurricular activities. It really serves to support Christian Science Sunday Schools.
CSW: How long have you been a Camp Director?
Kathleen: I have been in my Director role since August 2009, and I have been involved with Camp Kohahna since 1999.
CSW: Why do you enjoy your job as Camp Director?
Kathleen: Camps Leelanau & Kohahna are one of the dearest spots on earth and I feel so privileged to be able to work at a place that practices and teaches genuine Christian Science. I love the campers, counselors, and staff and I genuinely care about their experiences here and at home! I love my job because it is a meaningful work, and this is a beautiful place (voted by Good Morning America viewers as the most beautiful place in America).
CSW: What is a campership?
Kathleen: A campership is like a scholarship. We award camperships for families who need help paying for camp for their children. Our most important message is that money should never be a reason to deter someone from having their children come to camp. We believe in the strength of our programs and we are here to help make them a reality for you.
CSW: Do I have to be a Christian Scientist to attend camp?
Kathleen: Yes. These camps serve youth who attend Christian Science Sunday School.
CSW: Who should attend this meeting? I don't have kids. Can I come anyway to see what it's all about?
Kathleen: Anyone can attend the show. Our hope is to help inform every one of our excellent programs—summer camp, family camp, and Harvest Weekend for women. There is something for everyone, though the focus will most certainly be about nurturing new children in the camp family.
