I was thinking about this month’s MET, Praying the Lord’s Prayer. What came to mind? Not the prayer itself or Mary Baker Eddy’s inspired interpretation, but the words she used to begin the preface of her seminal work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." (p. vii) Suddenly, to me, those words and the Lord’s Prayer were clearly related.
The first half of Mrs Eddy’s sentence—leaning on the sustaining infinite—is what I am doing when I pray the first half of the Lord’s Prayer. It is when I address God directly: Our Father which art in heaven; am so grateful for Him—Hallowed be Thy name; and when I acknowledge His power—Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
The second half of her sentence—to-day is big with blessings—is the second half of the prayer. It is the result of my humble willingness to listen to Him and follow His direction. I will wait patiently to be filled with good; Give us this day our daily bread. I will be forgiven because I forgive; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. I will not be tempted by fear; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
What more could I want? Today is big with blessings. What more can there be? For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
